  • The ancient Silk Road trading city of Khiva Uzbekistan, supposedly founded by Shem, the son of Noah. Also fabled as a city destroyed and rebuilt seven times and has had a critical role as a staging post between East and West. A modern day museum city in the old part (which shuts at 5.30pm), the rest is still very much a city of traders

  • Walking in the Tajik-Kyrgyz border region of the High Pamirs and Tian Shan mountains is a magical experience. Fascinating to visit some of the old trading posts along the original Silk Road from Osh to Kashgar. The tents might have been a bit antique but the views are timeless

  • Morning light over the Registan in Samarkand, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia. At the heart of this ancient Silk Road city there were these three schools / madrasahs - the Ulugh Beg Madrasah (1417–1420), the Tilya-Kori Madrasah (1646–1660) and the Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619–1636)

  • Farmstead high in the mountains on the Kyrgyz / Tajik border - with glorious views down the valley (behind me) to the High Pamirs). Sitting on part of the southern route of the ancient Silk Roads this may seem remote but was very much a part of ancient trading routes.
