The ancient Silk Road trading city of Khiva Uzbekistan, supposedly founded by Shem, the son of Noah. Also fabled as a city destroyed and rebuilt seven times and has had a critical role as a staging post between East and West. A modern day museum city in the old part (which shuts at 5.30pm), the rest is still very much a city of traders
