The historic Vergelegen wine estate near to Stellenbosch in the Western Cape of South Africa is a wine estate with great history and also a couple of national monument trees (giant camphors) to sit under. The wines were dramatically affected by the phylloxera blight and it was only since 1987 when AmFarms (part of Anglo American) purchased the estate has the estate, gardens and buildings really come back to life. As the first place Nelson Mandela came to meet his newly formed ANC (May 1990) after leaving Robbin Island it also has a strong place in South African modern history.
