Cordoba. Along with a rich European history, this was home of Ziryab a 9th-century musician, cook, and all-around trendsetter. Responsible for introducing toothpaste and deodorant into Europe, an achievement for which we all owe him a debt of thanks. In addition, he introduced crystal glasses and tablecloths to the court at Cordoba and established the ritual of a three-course meal. He was such a good musician that he had a 200 gold dinar, a month (c.$33,000USD) allowance.
