  • Tilla-Kori Madrasah, at the heart of the Registan, Samarkand. Completed in around 1660 the name “Tilla-Kori” is translated as “decorated with gold”. Here in the soft morning light (around 06.00) warming the intricate mosaic tiles.

  • Morning light over the Registan in Samarkand, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia. At the heart of this ancient Silk Road city there were these three schools / madrasahs - the Ulugh Beg Madrasah (1417–1420), the Tilya-Kori Madrasah (1646–1660) and the Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619–1636)

  • Park Güell in Barcelona is one of the great places to see the range of work from Antoni Gaudi and some of the ideas and inspirations that many will recognise in the much more photographed cathedral Sagrada Familia.

  • The ancient Silk Road trading city of Khiva Uzbekistan, supposedly founded by Shem, the son of Noah. Also fabled as a city destroyed and rebuilt seven times and has had a critical role as a staging post between East and West. A modern day museum city in the old part (which shuts at 5.30pm), the rest is still very much a city of traders

  • Gaudi's inspired 'snail staircase' in the Sagrada Familia. In this case, looking up, rather than a more familiar 'down' shot - I was intrigued by the additional curves on the underside of the steps. It also rather neatly shows his ratio of 1:12 with 12 steps to make the circle.

  • Inside the Alcazar Palace in Seville. This is El Patio del Yeso (The Plaster Patio): This beautiful, ornate garden retains elements of the Almohade architectural style of the Moors from the 12 century.

The first walls were built in Gallo-Roman times, with major additions made in the 13th and 14th centuries. Château Comtal, a 12th-century castle within the Cité

  • St Non's chapel and retreat on the Pembrokeshire coast near St David's, Britain's smallest city. St Non was mother to St David, patron saint of Wales.

  • Bukhara Ark, scene for many stories in the Great Game. Building started in around the 5th century to create both fortress, dungeon and library. In legend, the creator of the Ark was the epic Iranian / Persian hero prince, Siyavusha who fled here to the heart of the lands of Turan (as then known). A key staging post in the great Silk Road
